Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
- The EAHCA was amended in 1990 and was called the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Through this act, students with disabilities were entitled to attend public school to receive the education they needed, at no cost to parents. IDEA was based on the belief that all children can learn and have the right to an equal opportunity in education; children with disabilities are entitled to the same education given to their peers without disabilities. - IDEA was reauthorized in 1997. This amendment called for students with disabilities to be included in state and district-wide assessments. Also, regular education teachers were required to be members of the IEP (Individualized Education Program) team.
